Laser tattoo removal works by emitting short pulses of energy, using a specific wavelength that is selectively absorbed by the tattoo ink. The ink deposits in the dermis absorb this high energy. This then shatters the tattoo pigment into thousands of tiny particles, which enables the body to eliminate the ink particles naturally through the body’s immune system. The tattoo gradually fades as the body breaks down and removes the ink via the lymphatic system over time. Multiple laser sessions are usually required for complete tattoo removal, with each session breaking down more ink and allowing your body to remove it.

At Renegade, we use the Leonidas Meditech Picotech — a medical-grade class 4 pico laser that targets all ink colours precisely while protecting your skin. It’s one of the most advanced systems available in Australia, designed for better fading and faster recovery. Pico lasers deliver energy in ultra-short pulses, making them faster, more effective and less damaging to the skin than traditional Q-switched lasers.

The number of sessions required for laser tattoo removal varies depending on several factors. Factors influencing the number of sessions include the size, colour, age, location, ink depth and the type of ink used. Additionally, individual differences in skin type, immune response, and overall health can affect the speed and effectiveness of tattoo removal. Treatment sessions are typically spaced 8-12 weeks apart to allow the skin to heal and the body to process and eliminate the ink. At Renegade Tattoo Removal, we take pride in being honest and transparent. When you visit us for your first session, we will give you an estimate of the number of sessions you'll need and a realistic timeframe for the entire process.

This is probably one of the most common questions we get! The laser can cause some discomfort, but sessions are so quick that the pain is over within a few short minutes! We use several techniques to minimise discomfort throughout your session including a professional cooling device and the choice of using numbing cream if you want to. We provide you with ice, cooling gel and wrap the area after your session if necessary.

Although appointment times are 30-45 minutes, the actual treatment ranges from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the size of the tattoo.

Your skin can look and feel as though you have a sunburn immediately after treatment. At first, the tattoo can ‘frost’ (turn white/grey) due to the reaction with the laser. This can last up to 15-20 minutes. Your skin may become red and swell. Within the next day, bruising and crusts may appear. In some cases, blisters, followed by scabs may also form. Rest assured, this is all completely normal and we will provide you with thorough aftercare instructions and assistance to help you take care of your tattoo.

Laser tattoo removal is considered a safe and effective way to fade or remove tattoos. We have experienced and qualified technicians who adhere to safety protocols to help minimise any risks associated with your treatment. Side effects are temporary and may include redness, swelling, blistering, crusts, bruising, changes in skin colour and scabbing. These will subside in the coming days to weeks. Scarring and hypo/hyper pigmentation is a potential risk that all clients need to be aware of. This is rare, however during the initial stages of the healing phase there is a chance that scar tissue can start to form. If blisters or scabbing occur after your treatment, do not disturb the skin, as this can lead to scar tissue formation. Looking after your newly treated tattoo and following aftercare instructions is crucial in preventing changes to the skin. Our skilled team offer comprehensive aftercare instructions to minimise any potential side effects that may arise.

Everyone is completely different and healing times may vary. The outer layers of skin can heal from days to several weeks depending on the response you had after treatment (EG. blisters, scabbing). The deeper layers of the skin take 6 weeks to heal which is why we treat your tattoo at a minimum of 6 weeks. We recommend a minimum of 3-6 months before getting a new tattoo over the treated area. This allows the skin to completely heal so you get the best possible outcome for your new tattoo.

      - Avoid excessive sun exposure and moisturise with a good quality moisturiser for 2 weeks prior to your session. We recommend moisturisers containing Vitamin E or Panthenol. Always use a SPF 30+ or greater over the treatment area for several weeks prior to your session.
- Avoid any active ingredients such as Vitamin A, chemical exfoliants (AHA, BHA) and Vitamin C on the area for 5 days prior to your session. If you’re unsure what ingredients are considered active - just email or text us!
- Do not have waxing or any treatment that will cause trauma to the skin for 3 days prior to your appointment.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle - drink plenty of water, eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.
- Before your session, make sure the area is free of makeup, fake tan, shave the area if necessary and leave it product free.
- If you’re applying numbing cream - do this for 90 minutes prior to your appointment. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to correctly apply the specific numbing cream you’re using.
- There are a few instances where clients are unable to receive laser tattoo removal or we need to reschedule your appointment. These include: sunburn or excessive recent sun exposure on the treatment area, pregnancy, breastfeeding, active infection on the treatment area, use of some medications or antibiotics, Roaccutane (within the last 6 months) and poor immune system function from conditions such as HIV/AIDS or immunosuppressive medications. If you are unsure if you’re suitable for treatment - please email or text us.
